Best Summer Entertainment to See and Do in 2019

By Alicia Geigel on July 28, 2019

As we are entering into the middle of the summer, you may find yourself getting bored with your normal routine of binge-watching Netflix or hanging out with your friends by the pool. While there is nothing wrong with having a summer routine, its also fun to be able to branch out and experience something outside of what you do regularly, like seeing a movie, attending to a show, letting loose a music festival, or going to an amusement park!

Are you currently bored with your typical summer routine? Looking for some fun summer entertainment to experience? Check out these four fun ways to enjoy the remainder of the summer, either by yourself or with friends!

Movies

  • For Kids: Whether you have kids or are simply a kid at heart, there are some awesome movies to see this summer that will fill your heart with nostalgic happiness. Toy Story 4 (released June 21) is the final movie in the popular series and is bound to make you or the kids giggle all while tugging on your heartstrings. The Lion King (released July 19) is a digitally animated remake of the 1994 movie that we all loved as kids. With a stellar cast that includes voices from Donald Glover and Seth Rogan, this is a must-see!
  • For Horror Freaks: Summer 2019 is a great time to see some spine-chilling movies if you’re into horror! If you’re into psychologically scary films, Midsommar (released July 3) is perfect for you. The movie follows a group of people who travel to Sweden to attend a festival, but once they arrive, they discover that they’re really in the grip of a pagan cult. If you’re more into traditional, jump scare, paranormal-type horror, Annabelle Comes Home (released June 26) is your movie. The seventh installment in The Conjuring franchise, Annabelle Comes Home follows Ed and Lorraine Warren as they try and contain the demonic spirit contained in the Annabelle doll.
  • For Adults: If you’re generally looking for some simple entertainment, there are some awesome releases this summer. Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (releasing July 26) has a strong cast featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, and will not disappoint as the multiple storylines will keep you wrapped in the whole time. Looking to be on the edge of your seat in the theater? Crawl (released July 12) will have you scared to go near water after you’re done watching it. The movie centers on a father and daughter who get trapped in their home during a hurricane and hunted by alligators. Crikey!

Shows

There’s nothing better than being able to indulge in some stellar entertainment like seeing a show on Broadway. There’s something about the liveliness of the actors, the boisterous music, and the overall experience that makes it so worthwhile. There are numerous shows to see this summer, and here are some that are worth your attention! By the way, all of these shows are also on touring nationally and are not just in New York!

  • Mean Girls
  • Waitress
  • Dear Evan Hansen

  • Mo Pop: One of the greatest music festivals in the mid-summer, Detroit’s Mo Pop is an awesome opportunity to see some of the best popular and indie bands this summer. With musicians like Tame Impala, Lizzo, Vampire Weekend, Ella Mai, Kali Uchis, and more, this amazing summer lineup will have you feeling fun and letting loose! For more information on the two-day festival (hosted on July 27 and 28), check out the official Mo Pop site.
  • Lollapolooza: Chicago’s Lollapolooza has annually been held in Grant Park since 1991, and there’s a reason why there’s been no sign of the festival slowing down or stopping. Not only is there great music every year, but there is also plenty of amazing food from Chicago’s best restaurants. This year’s lineup includes huge musicians such as Ariana Grande, Twenty One Pilots, The Strokes, Tame Impala, Childish Gambino, and more. Buy your tickets now for the festival in August!
  • Woodstock 50: Yes, you’ve read this next one correctly, it’s been a whole 50 years since the original Woodstock Music Festival in 1969. Honoring the legacy of the festival, Woodstock 50 is including a massive lineup of a variety of amazing musicians such as The Killers, Miley Cyrus, Chance the Rapper, Jay Z, Halsey, Cage the Elephant and more! As well as featuring music, the festival’s mission is to bring awareness to pressing issues of today’s society and is supporting missions like March for Our Lives, Conservation International, and Head Count.

Picture it, you’ve just been on your fourth roller coaster ride, basking in the hot sunshine with a funnel cake in one hand and an icy-cold slushie in another hand. Amusement parks just scream summertime fun, and what better opportunity to experience something exhilarating than at an amusement park with your friends? The rides, the delicious food, and the great company can give you summer memories that can last a lifetime. There are plenty of amusement parks around the country, and here are just some of the best!

With this variety of entertainment, I can guarantee that you won’t have a dull moment for the remainder of the summer. Have fun and soak up the sun!
